How to Transport a Pet to Turkey
Many foreigners who have decided to buy an apartment in Turkey and move to permanent residence abroad often have pets living in their families. And, of course, an important question arises; how will we transport the pet to Turkey?
The rules for transporting animals should be clarified best with the airline carrier, whose services you plan to use, because each of the lower parts may have its own nuances. In our article we will summarize the general provisions of the transportation of animals.
It is necessary to prepare the animal itself and its documents for the trip (it is desirable to clarify the full list of necessary documents shortly before going to the consulate of the country of destination – the Turkish consulate):
Microchip.
It is mandatory to vaccinate animals in the Republic of Turkey. Therefore, in order to cross the border into Turkey, your pet must have an embedded microchip.
An international veterinary passport.
The passport must be filled out in English and contain mandatory vaccination marks - 2 vaccinations against plague, parvovirus and rabies; and signs of systematic degradation every 3-4 months.
Rabies vaccine.
Vaccination should be carried out at least a month before the animal is imported to Turkey, and not more than a year before. The drug must comply with the WHO standard.
Comprehensive vaccination.
Full vaccination is not mandatory, but it may be needed on some large aircraft. Therefore, it is recommended that you still be insured and get all the necessary vaccinations for your animal.
Treatment of dehydration and insectoacaricide.
From 24 to 48 hours before departure, the animal should be disinfected with certified drugs and treated with insecticides.
Veterinary certificate (Form-1).
This is a veterinary certificate issued in the bodies of the state veterinary station. The validity period is limited (as a rule, 5 days).
The certificate that the transported animal does not represent tribal value is mandatory when suppressing the border.
A foreign citizen can bring a maximum of one cat, one dog, one bird and 10 goldfish to Turkey.
Animals are transported only in special containers that must comply with the rules of the International Association of Air Carriers (if they are not suitable, the animal may not be allowed to be transported):
the width is two widths of the animal's body;
height - the height of the animal in a standing position;
length - the length of the animal's body plus half the length of its paws;
The bottom of the container should be covered with an absorbent material;
there must necessarily be an air intake into the container;
The container should be covered with a dark cloth that does not allow light;
For safe transportation of the container, it must be with handles.
Payment of transportation of the animal is made for excess baggage, regardless of whether you have other baggage. The cost will depend on the fare system of the air carrier - by weight or by the number of seats. In addition, a fee october be charged in the amount of about 15-25 US dollars. when transporting a dog weighing more than 40 kg, you will need to purchase a separate passenger seat.
You need to book a place for the animal at least a day before departure. Also, if you plan to take your pet to the cabin of the aircraft, check in as early as possible, because it is allowed to transport no more than two animals at the same time in the cabin of the aircraft.
At the airport, the animal is examined at the veterinary checkpoint.
Depending on the airline, you can transport the animal both in the luggage compartment and in the cabin of the aircraft. In order for the animal to travel in the cabin, you must comply with certain conditions:
the animal should be clean and healthy jul;
It is placed in a special container in accordance with international rules;
The weight of the container should not exceed 5-8 kg (depending on the air carrier), the dimensions should not be more than 115 cm according to the sum of 3 measurements;
The owner of the animal must hold the container in his hand or place it under the chair (it is forbidden to move the container to the seat!).
There are separate rules for the transportation of guide dogs - they are transported free of charge. A passenger who has serious problems with hearing or vision must submit supporting documents and have a nose on the dog. Airline staff will determine which seat the passenger should sit in upon landing, and the dog will be near the owner.
There are animals or breeds prohibited for export / import. Check this moment at customs separately according to your pet.
If you are going on a trip with your pet, consider the moment when you will need more time to pass the check. Therefore, plan your arrival at the airport a few hours before departure.
Also, be sure to bring food and water for the animal and prepare a feeding instruction (preferably in English), which you will forward to an airline employee on board.
